Importance of Fasting Animals

My findings on fasting for dogs in the past and recently for my Chow dog, Baloo, who is a senior, is that when she goes long periods of time eating regularly and worse, receiving treats everywhere I take her, people ask if she is old.

Recently, she was not perky at all and vomited a little. Immediately, I began her fasting protocol (which is different) for dogs depending on the weight and health. I restrained from feeding her for over two and a half days with (water always available) where she did not seem to be interested in food and could have easily gone three days. I fed her a meal of chicken, vegetables, liver, and fish oil. I took her for a walk, and people asked if she was a puppy. Then, we hit a trail where she ran like one.

The top advantage of fasting for dogs is to allow the digestive system time to rest and repair itself.

Fasting triggers a process called autophagy, where the body gets rid of viruses, bacteria, damaged cells, and cellular debris that results from inflammation. Autophagy is a cleansing process that will improve general health.

One very important thing to stop is the treats, as they disrupt the digestive process in between meals, which we now call intermittent fasting.
